Vacancy: Welder/Fitter
Contract Type: Fixed Term

Position Summary

The Welder is responsible for fabricating and joining metal parts by welding or using other techniques in a commercial workshop setting. This role requires expertise in various welding processes, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications to produce high-quality weldments.

 

Key Duties / Responsibilities

  1. Welding Operations
    • Fabricate new bakeware and perform repairs.
    • Fabricate, assemble, and erect new steel structures.
    • Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to fabricate metal components.
    • Select and set up welding equipment and tools based on assignment requirements.
  2. Material Preparation
    • Prepare metal surfaces for welding by cleaning, grinding, or cutting as necessary.
    • Ensure proper fit-up of metal components and alignment to specifications.
    • Identify and address any defects or imperfections in materials before welding.
  3. Quality Control
    • Inspect weldments for quality and accuracy, ensuring they meet industry standards.
    • Conduct visual and non-destructive testing (NDT) to verify weld integrity.
    • Perform rework or repairs to correct any defects or deficiencies.
  4. Safety Compliance
    • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries.
    • Use appropriate PPE and ensure workshop safety for self and others.
    • Report any hazards, incidents, or near misses to the Workshop Supervisor or Safety Officer.
  5. Documentation and Reporting
    • Maintain accurate records of welding activities, including materials used, parameters, and inspection results.
    • Complete welding logs, work orders, and required documentation.
    • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding project status or issues.

 

Academic and Professional Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Certificate in Welding (Artisan Grade 1)
    • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in welding and fitting roles
    • Proficiency in metal fabrication
    • Certification in welding and fabrication

 

Key Skills and Competencies

Technical Skills
• Welding skills across ARC, MIG, TIG, and gas welding
• Ability to interpret shop manuals, job cards, and technical drawings
• Use of equipment including press brake, bending and rolling machines, plasma cutter, drill, chop saw, and galvanizing tools

Soft Skills
• Safety awareness and adherence to protocols
• Time management and organization
• Ability to work under pressure
• Attention to detail and quality control
• Preferably male candidate aged between 30–35 years
• Willingness to work in Nairobi, Mombasa, or Kisumu

 

Work Conditions

  • Ability to work in workshop environments involving fabrication, maintenance, and site installations
    • Flexibility to work in any of the listed locations
